Identification and Verification

Identification
Identification and Verification - 1:n and 1:1 comparison

One always comes across the terms identification and verification when using biometrical systems for the authentification of individuals. The goal of a biometrical recognition is to detect the identity of an individual (identification) or to accept, as well as reject, a given identity. (verification)

During identification the user's biometrical trait is scanned and then compared with all traits already saved into the system (1:n Comparison) If there is a match during the comparison then the identification is successful and the match leads us to the User-Id.

During verification the user first provides an "identity" (such as a PIN number or ID card) and then the biometrical trait is scanned. The identity given is then compared to the biometrical trait that corresponds to this identity. If both match then the verification is successful.
